LAW REFORM AND INTERNATIONAL TREATIES WORKING GROUP (LRITWG)

The LRITWG undertakes to advise and assist government in formulating legislation and administrative directives and procedures and to recommend the necessary measures to be taken. This is done through the Working Group’s efforts in conducting researches in areas of human rights concern such as preventive detention laws and freedom of expression and assembly. The Working Group is also active in engaging relevant stakeholders and public at large in developing opinions and gathering various views in relation to the implementation of international human rights treaties and standards in the country, for example on the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) and Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). The Working Group is also responsible in having open discussions or working together with the government and civil society on inculcating human rights perspectives or principles into existing laws and policies applied in Malaysia.

Functions:

  • Pursuant to section 4(1)(b) of the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia Act 1999 (Act 597), to advise and assist the Government in formulating legislation and administrative directives and procedures and recommend the necessary measures to be taken; and
  • Pursuant to section 4(1)(c) of the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia Act 1999 (Act 597), to recommend to the Government with regard to the subscription or accession of treaties and other international instruments in the field of human rights.
