TAN SRI ABU TALIB OTHMAN – CHAIRMAN

TAN SRI ABU TALIB OTHMAN

Tan Sri Abu Talib, a Barrister-at-Iaw from Lincoln's Inn, entered the Judicial and Legal service of Malaysia in 1962 where he served in various capacities. He was appointed the Attorney-General (AG) of Malaysia in September 1980. As legal officer and AG, he participated and represented Malaysia in the Law of the Sea Conference, U.N. Conferences on Narcotic Drugs and Refugees, Legal Cooperation, Land Boundaries and Extradition. After retiring as AG in October 1993, he served on the Board of several public and private companies. In 1999, he was appointed to conduct a public inquiry before the Royal Commission, established to enquire into the injuries suffered by former Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim while under police custody. He was appointed Chairman of SUHAKAM in April 2002.

TAN SRI DATUK SERI PANGLIMA SIMON SIPAUN - VICE CHAIRMAN

TAN SRI DATUK SERI PANGLIMA SIMON SIPAUN

Tan Sri Simon obtained his BA (Honours) degree in political science and public administration from Victoria University, Wellington, New Zealand in 1965. He attended a one-year post graduate course in government and development at Oxford University, England in 1968/1969. He held various senior positions in the Sabah State Civil Service including State Training Officer, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Local Government, Ministry of Communication and Works, Ministry of Finance, Secretary of Natural Resources and Deputy State Secretary. His last position before retirement was Sabah State Secretary from 1988 to 1993. From October 1993 to November 2003 he was Chairman of the Sabah Public Service Commission. He has also served as Chairman/Director/Board Member in many government and private companies and agencies including Malaysia Airlines System (MAS), Employee Provident Fund (EPF) and Universiti Malaysia Sabah. He was also a member of the National Unity Advisory Panel from 1996 to 2000. He is active in several welfare and charitable organizations

DATUK DR. CHIAM HENG KENG

DATUK DR. CHIAM HENG KENG

Dr. Chiam was formerly the Professor of Social Psychology at the Department of Educational Psychology, Universiti Malaya and she held this Chair for more than 13 years. She received her first degree in Chemistry from University of Malaya in 1965 and went on to receive her Diploma in Education at the University of Singapore and Masters in Education from the University of Sydney before returning to her alma mater to complete her Ph.D. in 1976. A well-known authority on child and adolescent psychology and early childhood education, she has authored several books and numerous articles in her field of specialisation, social issues and education and is a columnist for the Sunday Star. She serves on numerous committees including the National Council on the Protection of Children, the National Population and Family Development Board, the Advisory Council of the National Science Centre, the National Children's Council of Advisors and Consultants of the Ministry of National Unity and Social Development, Accreditation Board for Childcare Training Courses of the Social Welfare Department, and the Drug Prevention in Schools Committee.

DR. MOHAMMAD HIRMAN RITOM ABDULLAH

DR. MOHAMMAD HIRMAN RITOM ABDULLAH

Dr. Hirman received his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from University Malaya in 1977 and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh in 1983. He began his medical career in the Government service in 1977 and served mainly in hospitals in Sarawak. He resigned to enter private practice in 1989 as Consultant General Surgeon and sole proprietor of Klinik Satok. He is a Visiting Consultant General Surgeon to Normah Medical Specialist Centre, member of the Sarawak Islamic Council, a board member of the Sarawak Heart Foundation, Normah Medical Foundation and a member of the Dharul Falah Foundation. He is the chairman of the Al Hidayah Board of Trustee for Muslim Converts. He is a Member of the ECOSOC Working Group and the Indigenous People Sub Working Group in SUHAKAM. He is also a Member of SUHAKAM Investigation Team on the Bakun Hydro Electricity Project Impact on the Indigenous People Population.

TAN SRI DATO' ASIAH ABU SAMAH

TAN SRI DATO' ASIAH ABU SAMAH

Dato' Asiah retired as Director-General of Education of the Ministry of Education in 1993 after a long career in the field of education. A graduate of the University of Malaya, Singapore she entered the teaching profession in 1961 and taught in several schools including Tunku Kurshiah College, Seremban, where she served as Principal from 1966 to 1970. In 1970, she joined the Ministry of Education where she held several posts including Director of the Curriculum Development Centre (1973 to 1987), Director of Educational Planning and Research and finally as Director-General of Education. Upon her retirement as Director-General, she was appointed Corporate Advisor (Education) Land and General Berhad. She is also a Board Member of Lang Education Sdn Bhd, a Distinguished ISIS Fellow and the Chairman of the Governing Board of the International Institute of Educational Planning UNESCO, Paris.

DATUK DR. RAJ ABDUL KARIM

DATUK DR. RAJ ABDUL KARIM

Datuk Dr. Raj Abdul Karim is currently the Regional Director of the International Planned Parenthood Federation, East and South East Asia and Oceania Region, a position she held since October 1999. From 1992 till then, she was the Director-General of the National Population and Family Development Board, Malaysia and prior to this she was the Director of the Public Health Institute, Ministry of Health. She is the Vice President of Malaysian Council for Child Welfare (MKKM) and Advisor to the Malaysian Association of Maternal and Neonatal Health (MAMANEH) and an EXCO Member of Pan Pacific and South East Asia Women's Association (PPSEAWA). She has served as a consultant and temporary advisor in several WHO, UNFPA, UNICEF and UNESCAP Committees and meetings and was a member of the WHO Expert Committee on Maternal and Child Health in the 1980's and 1990's. She was the Chair of the UN Commission on Population and Development from March 1998 to 1999 and Vice Chair from March 1997 to 1998.

DATO' DR. ABDUL MONIR YAACOB

Dato' Dr Abdul Monir is currently the Director-General of Institute of Islamic Understanding Malaysia (IKIM). He attended Islamic religious schools including Kolej Islam Malaya before continuing his education at the prestigious University Al-Azhar in Cairo, Egypt. He then took up law at the University of London where he earned a Diploma in Law and a Masters of Philosophy in Law. He joined Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia as lecturer in the Faculty of Islamic Studies and later servedthe Faculty of Law. He received his doctorate from the International Islamic University Malaysia in 1991

DATO' CHOO SIEW KIOH

DATO' CHOO SIEW KIOH

Dato' Choo Siew Kioh, a graduate of University of Singapore, entered the civil service in October 1968 when he joined the Diplomatic and Administrative Service in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA). He served in various capacities including postings in the Philippines, Thailand, the Federal Republic of Germany and Japan. His first Ambassadorial appointment was in 1988 to the Republic of Mali, with concurrent accreditation to Senegal, Guinea and Gambia. In 1989, he was a member of the Malaysian Delegation to the 44th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York where he was elected as the Deputy Chairman of the Second Committee (Political). In 1991, he was conferred the Order of the Sacred Treasure by Emperor Akihito of Japan and in 1997, was made Datuk Paduka Mahkota Perak. In 1995 he served as Malaysian Ambassador to Sweden with concurrent accreditation to Finland, Norway and Denmark and as Ambassador to the former Soviet States of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. In 1999, he was appointed the High Commissioner for India, with concurrent accreditation as Ambassador to the Kingdom of Nepal. He retired from the Malaysian Foreign Service in December 2003.

TUNKU DATUK NAZIHAH TUNKU MOHAMED RUS

Tunku Datuk Nazihah Tunku Mohamed Rus, a graduate of University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, entered the civil service in May 1969 when she was appointed to the Administrative and Diplomatic Service of Malaysia and served as Assistant Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Malaysia. She served in various capacities including as Second Secretary at the Embassy of Malaysia in Bonn, Germany, First Secretary at the High Commission of Malaysia in Columbia, Sri Lanka, and Principal Assistant Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Malaysia. From 1979 – 1984, she served as a Counsellor at Malaysian Embassies including in The Netherlands, People’s Republic of China, and Indonesia. In 1986, she was reassigned as Deputy Director General ASEAN I, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Malaysia. In 1989 she was appointed as High Commissioner of Malaysia to Bangladesh and in 1992 as High Commissioner of Malaysia to New Zealand, concurrently accredited to Niue and Cook Islands. She was conferred the Darjah Dato’ Setia Negeri Sembilan in 1991 and Panglima Setia Diraja in 1999. In 2001 she was assigned as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Malaysia to the Republic of France and concurrently accredited to the Republic of Portugal. She was appointed a Commissioner with the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia in June 2004.

DATO' SIVA SUBRAMANIAM A/L NAGARATNAM

DATO' SIVA SUBRAMANIAM A/L NAGARATNAM

Dato' Siva Subramaniam is currently advisor to Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (CUEPACS) and the Executive Secretary of the National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP). He entered the teaching profession in 1968 as a teacher and served for 36 years including as Headmaster and as seconded officer to the Public Service Department. He was elected President of CUEPACS (an umbrella body of Civil Service Unions) in 1998. He lends his experience as an educationist and insights on trade unions in various bodies including as Board Member of the Employee Provident Fund (EPF), Member of National Economic Action Council (NEAC), National Information Technology Council (NITC), National conomic Consultative Council (MAPEN II), Member of National Labor Advisory Council (NLAC), Committee Member of PEMADAM and Member of Research Modern Languages and Communication UPM. He has presented several papers at International Seminars, including UNESCO and ILO. Since 1970, Dato' Siva was elected as Chairman of the Workers Group National Joint Council and has played a key role in negotiations on several issues such as salaries terms and conditions for civil servants.

Datuk Dr Denison Jayasooria holds a PhD in sociology from Oxford Brookes University, United Kingdom. He was conferred the Darjah Panglima Jasa Negara (PJN) in 2006.His working career has been with Non Governmental Organisations such as the Methodist Church (June 1981 - May 1986), Malaysian CARE (June 1986 - Dec 1993), Foundation for Community Studies & Development (Jan 1994 - July 1997) and Yayasan Strategik Sosial (August 1997- May 2008).His fields of expertise are in social work, community mobilisation,policy research on urban poverty, social development, minority concerns for social inclusion and effective public sector delivery of services.He served as a member of the Royal Police Commission which was established to enhance the operations and management of the Royal Malaysian Police Force (2004-2005). He was also a member of the Second National Economic Consultative Committee (1999-2000). Heis a frequent panellist at conferences and seminars including TV talk shows. At SUHAKAM he is Chairman of the Economic, Social and Cultural Working Group (ECOSOC)"

DATO’ DR. MICHAEL O.K. YEOH is Co-Founder & CEO of the Asian Strategy & Leadership Institute (ASLI), Malaysia’s leading independent Think Tank and foremost Conference Organiser that brings together senior government, business and thought leaders in interactive, high-level discussions. As CEO of ASLI, he conceptualised and founded the World Ethics & Transparency Forum, the World Islamic Economic Forum, the ASEAN Leadership Forum and the Asia Economic Summit. He also established the Centre for Public Policy Studies (CPPS) to undertake independent public policy research. A strong advocate of international networking and track two confidence-building processes, he helped set up the Malaysia-US Business Council, the Malaysian-British Business Council, the Malaysia-Russia Business Council and Malaysia-Indonesia Business Council where he serves as Executive Director of these Business Councils. He sat on the Board of SBB Asset Management Company (then Malaysia’s second largest fund management company managing over RM5 bill – USD1.5 bill assets, prior to the merger with CIMB Bank). He has also extensive experience in the Education and Healthcare industries. He was appointed by the Minister of Finance Incorporated to sit on the Board of Directors of Malaysia’s National Heart Institute. He was a Co-Founder and Director of Prime College and MSC-Syme Business School (set up in association with Australia’s Monash University). He was also Executive Director of Sunway College and currently sits on the Council of the Wawasan Open University. He graduated in Economics & Accounting from Monash University and did his practical accounting training with PricewaterhouseCoopers in Melbourne. He has attended the Aresty Institute of Wharton School in USA, the Melbourne Business School and UCLA’s Graduate School of Management. A Certified Management Consultant, he specializes in Corporate Strategic Planning, Asian Strategy and Political Economy. He was appointed by the Prime Minister to the National Unity Advisory Panel and the Royal Commission on Police. Dato’ Yeoh has written several books on Management, Leadership and Malaysian Politics such as Vision & Leadership, Management Strategies for Malaysian Companies, Globalization and the New South and the Malaysian Chinese. A sought after speaker, he has addressed international conferences and forums organised by the Asia Society New York, World Economic Forum, Confederation of Indian Industry, China Development Institute, Young Presidents Organization, Institute of Southeast Asian Studies Singapore, Michigan Business School, Wilton Park UK, the Monash Asia Institute Australia and the National Institute of Public Administration (INTAN).
